"Dead Paradise" Tiki carving by NEMO

After testing the waters in the tiki world with several custom vinyl toys, Mike "NEMO" Mendez has made the leap into a more traditional form of tiki art- carving his tikis out of actual wood.
The latest NEMO x Tenacious Toys exclusive tiki figure is titled "Dead Paradise". This is a 5 inch tall mixed-media piece, with the main body carved from balsa wood. As with all of NEMO's tiki pieces, "Dead Paradise" is available exclusively through Tenacious Toys at the following link:
http://www.tenacioustoys.com/NEMO_Dead_Paradise_tiki_p/nemodptiki.htm

You can view all of NEMO's past and present customs in his own section on Tenacious Toys:

http://www.tenacioustoys.com/category_s/107.htm

NEMO has several more finished tiki pieces lined up in his workshop. We also have a custom tiki-fied Vimobot series in the works with NEMO: Vimotikis! Vimobots are the 4-inch blank vinyl platform produced by Mimoco, and NEMO was very interested in their simple-yet-curvy shape. More info on NEMO's next customs, and the NEMO Vimotiki series, to be announced soon.

Inquiries should be directed to Benny at Tenacious Toys: tenacioustoys@gmail.com, or to NEMO himself.

Wanderlust... Huck Gee (press)

Two thousand ten, It’s been one hell of a year… at times utterly amazing, at others a struggle just to see the path ahead. I’m looking forward to what my future holds but in my preparations for the new year, I found myself revisiting a special time and place: my travels thru East Asia earlier this year. Heavily inspired by the beauty of Cambodia’s people and country, I took this as an opportunity to revisit the journeys of Raku. This print not only signifies the turning point of yet another year but begins a new chapter for my Gold Life tales. There are some huge developments coming in the second half of 2011. Stuff I’ve been pushing for and working towards for several years. I’m excited to see these projects finally coming to fruition and we will be leading up to them with more art, more toys, more prints, more customs… indeed, more awesomes. Gold Life is coming.
Raku, forever on the road, unassuming traveler by day, purveyor of the wealthy by night. Running from his past, walking steadfastly into his future. Caught in a moment, in the Valley of Three Falls, seemingly lost in thought. Wanderlust.
Each is printed on fine art watercolor paper (225gs), 20″x14″ (plus 1″ border on all sides), gold embossed, numbered and signed. Limited edition run of 100 prints, $60 each.

"BIOMORPHIC" The Solo Show of Gigi Bio (press)

The word "Biomorphic" is a term commonly referred as organic, abstract shapes derived from biology or
living organisms. The word, "bio", means life; and "morphic", meaning transformation. In an art sense, it is a focus on the power of natural life and use of organic shapes & line work. As a person and artist, it was only natural for me to be inspired by life, with great emphasis on transition. Living in New York, I see life in an urban state of mind capturing the world in 360 degree hyper views. Everyday, I am surrounded by culture, bustling streets, speeding traffic to buildings being torn & built back up in an instant.

My view of the world is a product of the past colliding with the present. I aim to expose the emotional side of the city streets pushing the final image to abstraction & constructing a new view of the world. Each piece represents a world full of ambition, energy and movement. I aim to recreate the world through multiple perspectives captured in various time frames. My artwork is greatly inspired by the world, but hidden between the layers is a narrative of life. My art is a prism of life, beauty and transformation.

I expose the beautiful complexities of being human.

Life is Art.

Saturday, January 29th, from 7pm – 11pm
Art Whino Gallery
122 Waterfront St.
National Harbor, MD 20745

Show end date: February 16th
The event is FREE and open to the public

Custom Blamo Toys Nimbus by Mikie Graham

Mikie (zombiemonkie) has been a busy bee as usual.  He customized a Blamo Toys Nimbus... his "Krang Nimbus" and it is no different than the rest of his figures. What do I mean by that? All his figures are awesome and bring out a little more of who Mikie is......

"As the 2nd annual "Blamo Custom Toy Show" draws to a close, show curator and avid toy customizer Mikie Graham has finally found the time to put together a detailed look at his custom Nimbus from the show.

Inspired by the TMNT cartoon's of his childhood, Mikie took his Nimbus figure and transformed it into "Krang,"the disembodied brain and ultimate bad guy from the cartoon television series.Mikie's custom uses the shape of the Nimbus figure and tweaks it, adding an extra head and turning the original Nimbus face into Krang himself; residing within the belly of his android behemoth. Completing the transformation Mikie added Krang's "brain tentacles" that snake out the figure to operate the tiny joysticks which control the hulking colossus. Krang is currently available along with all of the remaining Nimbus customs at Blamotoys.com"

The Big Picture: Mark Mothersbaugh + Shepard Fairey (press)

January 22-February 19, 2011
Opening Reception:
Saturday, January 22, 2011
8 - 11 p.m. Valet Parking Provided

Subliminal Projects and The Art of Elysium's Elysium Project are pleased to present a two-person show featuring work by artist, pop culture icon, and DEVO frontman Mark Mothersbaugh and artist Shepard Fairey. This exhibition focuses on their work as artists and philanthropists.
As artists, Mark and Shepard create work that demand the viewer's attention, drawing them into a world where scale is pushed to the forefront. From several feet back, Shepard's work tells one story while, up close, the intricate patterning tells another. The symbols in a Shepard print provide a contextual framework and the elaborate detailing reflects a careful attention to craft. Mark's creative process begins on a small scale. His postcard-size illustrations and paintings often serve as the initial step in his creative process, from which he then pulls imagery for his larger work. These highly personal postcards are created on an intimate scale and, once enlarged into large-format works, the viewer is invited to step into Mark's whimsical world. In both cases, it is the carefully thought out details that make The Big Picture.
These two artists are keenly aware of The Big Picture when committing to a charitable cause. Their influential roles as tastemakers and cultural icons serve as a bright spotlight on the charity they choose to support. Thanks to their dedication to The Art of Elysium, both artists help bring attention to the charity's mission, thus enriching the lives of gravely ill children in the Los Angeles serviced by the charity. Shepard Fairey, the 2010 Art of Elysium Visionary, and Mark Mothersbaugh, the 2011 Art of Elysium Visionary, are celebrated in this exhibition for their art and their charitable spirits.

"I am so thrilled that Shepard has opened his gallery for this extremely special collaboration. This is the first collaboration between two of our VISIONARIES. It is our hope that the people that have been asked to join our VISIONARY CIRCLE share in creative collaborations not only to benefit The Art of Elysium and all of its various programs but that their joint endeavors inspire change in the world at large. That is the BIG PICTURE that we are hoping for." --Jennifer Howell, founder of The Art of Elysium
The Art of Elysium is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1997 to support artists and provide relief for medically disabled and hospitalized children. This dual mission has grown into a full-circle program with the charity providing a professional platform for artists and, in exchange, artists volunteer their time and talent to children with serious illnesses. We provide artistic workshops in the following disciplines: acting, art, comedy, fashion, music, radio, songwriting and creative writing. We believe there is a powerful and mutual exchange of hope and appreciation that occurs when artists share their time and talent with children battling serious medical conditions. Today, the charity has offices in Los Angeles and New York and holds workshops for over 40,000 children a year.
Elysium Project is The Art of Elysium's platform where contemporary art intersects with philanthropy. We are committed to supporting emerging, mid-career and established artists through discerning art exhibitions, public art initiatives and special events. Elysium Project simultaneously raises funds and creates the infrastructure to ensure that medically disabled children have access to quality educational and therapeutic arts experiences.
